Research interests: wildlife habitat design, surface mine reclamation planning and design, landscape planning methods, landscape research methods, landscape theory, landscape ecology, environmental design, landscape hazards, visual quality assessment, conceptual design, international planning and design, and transportation planning and design.
Dr. Burley is a registered landscape architect and associate professor in the School of Planning, Design, and Construction at Michigan State University. He has done professional planning and design work in the United States, Canada, and Nepal. He has published over 200 articles and abstracts related to landscape architecture and one book in reclamation planning and design. His work has been published in English, Chinese, and French. Currently, he is the chair of the ASLA International Professional Practice Network, member and chair of papers and presentations for the AFB40 Landscape and Environmental Design Committee Transportation Research Board National Academies, member of the Landscape International Scientific Committee for the World Scientific and Engineering Academy and Society, and chair of the land-use and planning technical division of the American Society for Mining and Reclamation. Jon has won numerous teaching, design, and research awards, including a Fulbright to Portugal in 2003 and the 2005 Reclamation Researcher of the Year Award by the American Society for Mining and Reclamation. Jon has international connections at Tongji University, Shanghai, P. R. of China, Nanjing Forestry University, Nanjing, P. R. of China, Zhejiang Forestry University, Hangzhou, P. R. of China, Beijing University, Beijing, P.R. of China, Beijing Forestry University, P. R. of China, Universidade do Algarve, Faro, Portugal, Seoul National University, S. Korea, and Agrocampus Ouest-Paysage, Angers, France. At MSU, Jon works with visiting scholars and students from China, Portugal, and France. Besides English, Jon can also speak French (somewhat) and a little Portuguese and Putonghua (Mandarin Chinese). He has lectured in Nepal, China, S. Korea, Sweden, Estonia, Portugal, Germany, France, Switzerland, USA, United Kingdom, and Canada. Jon has led overseas studies in the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Portugal, and Italy. He has visited 35 countries. Jon has 12 sketchbooks of drawings from around the world, dating from 1975 until the present. He has oil painted almost 200 oil paintings. He is an avid gardener of hardy magnolias, Northern Lights series of azaleas, and dwarf evergreens. He also plays lead guitar and the piano.
