Research Interests: International development and planning, high-tech industrialization, and Asia’s urbanization

 Dr. Fan has been an assistant professor of Urban and Regional Planning at the School of Planning, Design, and Construction at Michigan State University (MSU) since January 2007. She has a Ph.D. in Economic Development (Department of Urban Studies and Planning) and a MS in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, both from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She also has a Master in City and Regional Planning from Rutgers University and a BS in Computer Science from Nanjing University, China. Before she joined MSU, Dr. Fan worked as a Japan Society of Promotion of Science (JSPS) Postdoctoral Fellow at the United Nations University. She conducted research on innovation, high-tech industrialization and urban and regional development in Asia. Her research was funded by the Japan Society for Promotion of Science.

Her research foci include: international development and planning, high-tech industrialization, and Asia’s urbanization. Her current research projects on Asia’s high-tech industrialization and China’s urban sustainability are funded by the Intramural Research Grant Program and the Center for Advanced Studies of International Development (CASID) at Michigan State University.

Dr. Fan has published peer-reviewed articles about innovation, high-tech industrialization, and urban development in China, Japan, and India. She edited a special issue on technology catching-up of China for International Journal of Technology and Globalization in 2007. She serves as an associate editor for two international academic journals: (1) International Journal of Technology and Globalization and (2) International Journal of Business and System Research.
