Eva Kassens is an assistant professor of urban and transport planning in the School of Planning, Design and Construction (SPDC) holding a joint appointment with Global Urban Studies Program (GUSP). She received her Diplom-Ingenieur (equivalent to a BA and 1 year MS) in Business Engineering at the Universität Karlsruhe (TH) in Germany, her MST (Master of Science in Transportation) from the Civil and Engineering Department at MIT, and her Ph.D. from the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at MIT. She was born in Germany and has lived in Sydney (Australia), London (UK), Barcelona (Spain), Lausanne (Switzerland), Athens (Greece), and Boston (USA). In her professional engagements, Eva has consulted for the Athens Airport Authority (2004, Summer Olympics), Vancouver Airport Authority (2010, Winter Olympics), and the Holy Mecca (2009, Pilgrimage Planning). Her research interests center around sustainability; from community planning to large scale urban planning projects. Her current work focuses large scale urban planning projects cities undertake to prepare for rising sea levels and on transport planning for passenger peak demands occurring during festivals, pilgrimages, and evacuations. For example, in her dissertation, she explored the urban change process cities undergo when hosting the Olympic Games through four case studies: Barcelona, Atlanta, Athens and Sydney. She is teaching “the sustainable city”.
