Research Interests: environmental behavioral studies including residents’ perceptions of safety in gated and non-gated communities, walking behaviors and residential satisfactions in new urbanist communities, and older person’s attitude toward high-tech amenities 

Dr. Suk-Kyung Kim has been an assistant professor of Interior Design in the School of Planning, Design, and Construction at Michigan State University (MSU) since January 2008. Before she joined MSU, Dr. Kim was an assistant professor in the Department of Textiles and Consumer Sciences (Housing Program) at Florida State University. She has a Ph.D. in Architecture from Texas A&M University, a M.S. and a B.S. in Housing and Interior Design from Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea. She also worked for 6 years as a senior research specialist in the Housing and Urban Research Institute of Korea National Housing Corporation, after she earned her masters’ degree.

Her research topics include: environmental behaviors, affordable housing design, housing for the elderly, children-friendly design, the recycling issue for green design, and the application of architectural theories to interior design such as new urbanism, defensible space theory, and supportive design theory.

Her peer-reviewed articles include residential space designs in other cultures, high-tech amenities for low-income families and for the elderly, post-occupancy evaluations in various residential environments, and sustainable design.
