Research Interests: urban regeneration for large cities in North America, Europe and Northeast Asia, land use planning for smaller communities, legal control of urban development to achieve open space preservation

 

Dr. Strauss is Professor in the Urban and Regional Planning Program. He has been there since 2001. Prior to that time he taught at several other places including the University of Kansas, Jackson State University and the Indiana University – Bloomington as well as universities located in Ireland, Germany, South Korea and Romania. His undergraduate training is in Political Science. He has a J.D. (law) from Northwestern University and a PhD in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has served as vice President of a State Chapter of the American Planning Association. He is a member of 3 State Bar Associations and the American Institute of Certified Planners. He has been a practicing lawyer and private planning consultant, City Attorney, County Planning Director and has served on a Governor’s staff as well as a consultant to the local, state and federal levels of government. He has produced many planning documents for use by citizens as well as academic journal articles.
