Research Interests: Information technology, knowledge and global information society; Michigan's nonprofit sector; Planning for mega-events – World’s Fairs and the Olympics.
Dr. Mark Wilson is Associate Director of the School of Planning, Design and Construction at Michigan State University. He is an Associate Professor of Urban Planning and a Research Economist with the Institute for Public Policy and Social Research. Mark Wilson has undergraduate and Master's degrees from the University of Melbourne (Australia), and an AM and PhD in Regional Science from the University of Pennsylvania. His research and teaching interests address urban planning, information technology, economic geography, public policy, and nonprofit organizations.
Specific research interests focus on three themes:
1) the economic, social, and political dimensions of cyberspace and the research initiative, E*Space: the Electronic Space Project, which investigates the urban and regional impact of the Internet. In 2006 he co-authored with Kenneth Corey, Urban and Regional Technology Planning, which develops strategies for communities to utilize information technology in a global economy. Currently he is writing with Aharon Kellerman and Kenneth Corey a text titled Global Information Society due for publication in 2010. He serves as Chair of the IGU Commission on the Geography of Global Information Society.
2) The planning, land use and economic issues associated with mega events, such as the Olympics and world’s fairs.
3) The Nonprofit Michigan Project, which explores the significance of Michigan's nonprofit sector, specializing in economic trends and public opinion about the sector.
