Student Organizations

Life Outside the Classroom
Although CM students find themselves spending most of their time outside of class studying and having group meetings, they are still able to find time for extracurricular and social activities. With all the CM program and Michigan State has to offer, it will not be hard to find activities and organizations that are of interest to you.

Student organizations provide many opportunities for students. By working in student organizations, students gain experience in working in and leading groups, planning activities, and evaluating the results.

Student Builders and Contractors Association (SBCA):
SBCA promotes the exploration of options in the construction industry and career goals. Membership is open to all BCM students and affiliated majors. Throughout the academic year the association conducts regular meetings on industry-related topics. Programs have featured contractors, developers, bankers, building inspectors, and attorneys specializing in construction. SBCA is supported by the Associated General Contractors of America and the National Association of Home Builders.

North American Society for Trenchless Technology (NASTT):
NASTT is a multiple disciplinary society of individuals and organizations with professional, utilitarian or environmental interests in Trenchless Technology. It was founded and incorporated as a non-profit organization in June 1990. NASTT is affiliated with the International Society for Trenchless Technology (ISTT) and shares the same basic concerns for the environmental and social costs of utilities trenching. NASTT members are automatically affiliated with ISTT through NASTT membership.

Sigma Lambda Chi (SLC):
SLC is the national honor society for construction students. Organized at MSU by Professor William B. Lloyd in 1949, MSU holds the alpha charter. To qualify for membership, students must have an accumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher. The society's objectives are to promote academic excellence; to serve the field of construction; to promote good relations among academia, the industry, and the public; and to recognize outstanding professionals in the construction and allied fields.

At MSU, the chapter reviews the CM program to ensure the curriculum meets current and projected industry needs. It also offers special loans and organizes tutoring programs for all CM students.

Other campus organizations
In addition to the CM student organizations, there are numerous other student organizations available to CM students. These include the Associated Students of Michigan State University, the Student Senate of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, political organizations, various honor societies, and many others.
