Scholarship Opportunities

Interior Design students working on design rendering drawings in the classroom.The School of Planning, Design and Construction (SPDC) awards scholarships annually for students across all of its programs and majors.  Each scholarship is made possible through the generous contributions from our donors.

How to Apply (for current SPDC students only)

The scholarship application will open Thursday, December 7, 2023 and will remain open until Tuesday, January 16, 2024 at 4:00 PM.  

All scholarship applications require at least two attachments:  

  1. General essay: a one- to two-page essay about your background, interests in your field of study, accomplishments, long-term goals, etc.
    • Include your name in the top right corner
    • Title Essay [LastName, FirstName - <program> essay] ex:  "Smith, John - MED essay"
  2. Current resume or CV
    • Title resume/CV [LastName, FirstName – resume] ex:  "Smith, John - resume" 

Some scholarships for Landscape Architecture and Urban & Regional Planning students require additional essays. Review the list of major-specific scholarships lower on this page to familiarize yourself with those opportunities and expectations in advance of submitting the scholarship application.  

This scholarship application is only for currently enrolled MSU students. Any scholarships available to incoming students will be shared via email at a later date with those who are eligible.

Completing the general scholarship application will ensure you are considered for all major-specific scholarships available. However, if you wish to apply for any of these special scholarships listed below, please take note of the additional requirements.

Landscape Architecture Undergraduate Scholarships

June Knostman Landscape Architecture Endowment
  • Endowed by June Knostman; awarded to third year Landscape Architecture students with financial need and at least a 3.2 GPA.
  • *Additional Essay Required. To apply for this scholarship, you will need to submit an additional one-page essay on what you want to accomplish in a career in Landscape Architecture. This scholarship will be awarded to students entering their third year of study in the next academic year, therefore only apply if you are currently enrolled in the second year of the LA program. Title the file name “Knostman Scholarship – YOUR NAME” before uploading. 
Thomas K. and Sheila T. Moore Landscape Architecture Fund
  • Endowed by Sheila T. and Thomas K. Moore; awarded to an undergraduate studying Landscape Architecture.The recipient will be chosen based on essay, GPA, and financial need.
  • *Additional Essay Required: To apply for this scholarship, you will need to submit an additional one- to two-page essay explaining your perspective on the interdisciplinary nature of planning, the design of vibrant and walkable communities, and how one could apply these planning and design ideals to the Greater Lansing area. If you’ve taken courses or trainings related to this, please include this information in your statement. Title the file name “Moore Scholarship Application – YOUR NAME” before uploading. 

Urban and Regional Planning Undergraduate Scholarships

Bergman Travel Grant
  • Established by Edward M. Bergman; awarded to an Urban and Regional Planning undergraduate student who has a need to travel to pursue planning-related research, with preference given to an applicant who is a first-generation university attendee to stimulate interest in conducting research. Award recipient will prepare a short description of the research proposed and how the travel grant would advance its prospects, which will be sent to the donor.
  • *Additional Statement Required: If you are an undergraduate student requiring travel funds to pursue planning-related research and would like to apply for these funds, be prepared to provide a short description of the research proposed and how the travel grant would advance your prospects. You will submit this statement directly into the scholarship application form. 
Tim Hernandez Urban Planning Scholarship
  • Endowed by Timothy L. Hernandez; awards based on academic achievement and professional goals, with preference to MSU Urban and Regional Planning students either enrolled in the MSU Honors College and/or students who are members of underrepresented groups. Specific selection based on faculty recommendations plus a career goals statement by applicants addressing their professional goals and how they plan to use their planning education to make a difference in the world.
  • *Additional Essay Required: To apply for this scholarship, you will need to submit an additional essay explaining how you expect to use your planning education to make a difference in the world. Title the file name “Tim Hernandez Scholarship – YOUR NAME” before uploading. 

Urban and Regional Planning Graduate Scholarships

Tim Hernandez Urban Planning Scholarship
  • Endowed by Timothy L. Hernandez; awards based on academic achievement and professional goals, with preference to MSU Urban and Regional Planning students either enrolled in the MSU Honors College and/or students who are members of underrepresented groups.
